STYLE GURU SPEAKS:
January 25th, 2012TANGERINE, PURPLE, BLUE and PINK…COLORS to love or hate this season???”
As a Bridal Stylist, my job is to tackle all the different aspects of your bridal attire that would make you the perfect bride…. keep in mind, how the bride and groom look is half the DRAMA of the entire wedding. To that point, if you needed to show a friend 5 pictures of your wedding or put up one wedding portrait in your house…what would it be?? The bride and groom of course, not the venue, not the centerpiece nor the food. Makes you realize the importance of how you put yourself together . So on that note…. tackling the first part of the problem…THE RIGHT COLOR!!!
A bride’s first question when she walks in to see us for a bridal consult is “What are the colors for the season?” So what are the colors for the 2012 bride…or even for the Indian Fashionista? The jewels tones continue with more refinement. Watch out for the Cobalt Blue, the Sapphire Pink, and always a beauty the Ruby Red. Also jumping the bandwagon this year are the likes of the Tangerine Tango and the Vibrant Yellow. The bottom line being, colors are in. Don’t pick shades that would blind the eye or hurt the aesthetically calm but definitely add in that color quotient to your attire. No neutrals no more!!
Now for the serious part, how important are the season’s colors when dressing as a bride??? The honest truth, MARGINALLY!!! The important thing to keep in mind while dressing as a bride is that while the event will last 5 hours, the pictures will last a lifetime. If you have never worn a blue or a green in your life, then obviously it is because generically it is not a color that flatters your skin so while it might the color of the season, is it really sensible to wear it to the most photographed event of your life??? Long story short, for all you beautiful brides to be, get an idea of the season’s colors but think classic and beautiful in terms of the color for you. If that pink or that shade of yellow is what you love then season aside, that’s what you need to wear. Whether the Fashion Fraternity says it is the color of the season or not. After all, while the season lasts a few months…your wedding look needs to last forever!!!
Till next time, when we’ll talk about the ideal lehnga fit for your body type!!!
Love, Shirin

Style guru speaks
January 17th, 2012STYLE GURU SPEAKS:
Sometimes I think I was born with fabrics and crystals in my hand J In the past 7 years building SHEHNAAI, I have been fortunate enough to deal with some of India’s best designers such as Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi, Vikram Phadnis, Rahul Rabani and Gautam Rakha, Jyoti Sharma and others while balancing clients here in the extremely metropolitan NY with an entirely individual aesthetic. If this experience has taught me anything, it’s how to make my American Indian Brides and Fashionistas look like a million bucks when they dress Indian. So here goes a start of a series where I will pick apart various aspects of Indian dressing such as colors, sillhouttes, embroideries etc. each week to give you a better understanding of how you too can make this possible for yourself. So watch out as we start off this week tomorrow with “TANGERINE, PURPLE, BLUE and PINK…COLORS to love or hate this season???”

And some more’ Fashion Updates:
April 5th, 2011
Designers Vikram Phadnis and Abhi Singh of Abhi & Rahul.
Recently we put updates on designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s brilliant line, inspired by all things Indian, from Sundarbans to a palette influenced by the colors of the Bengal tiger. Well, it certainly does not stop there, India has so much to offer, to draw inspiration from: on that note some designer better be coming up with an ‘all blue’ collection to celebrate our recent World Cup victory in Cricket.
Getting back to bridal collections, designer Vikram Phadnis’ recent collection was also inspired by “India through the designer’s eyes”. His collection comprised of long flowing anarkalis, dresses and saris in chiffons, crepe, velvet and a lot of silk. Opulence ruled, as the designer captured glimpses from the mughal-e-azam and Umrao jaan era to the richness of Rajasthan. Gorgeous vivid hues of rust orange, yellow, deep reds, pinks and navy were embellished with gold zari embroidery lending an aura of royalty and elegance to the ensembles.
Opulence continues, as designers Abhi & Rahul presented a grand bridal collection inspired by the beautiful princess Zeb-un-Nissa, daughter of Emperor Aurangzeb. Living up to their inspirational muse, which means beautiful woman, the collection was ornamental, royal and fit for a princess. Rich ethnic hues of orange, burgundy, emerald, pink, beige and white in velvets, silk, rubia cotton and khadi came together beautifully in traditional silhouettes but maintained an unconventional look. Subtle undertones enhanced with vivid embroideries offered a range of exclusive bridal ensembles to pick from. Long flowing anarkalis, lehengas and saris with Raja coats ruled the ramp.
Join us for the Shenaai Couture preview at the Shaadi trend bridal show on April 10th, 2011 at hotel Westin, Jersey City to view the bridal collections of designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Vikram Phadnis and Abhi Singh of Abhi and Rahul, along with many more.

What’s haute at Fashion Week?
April 1st, 2011Shehnaai brings you ramp updates and more…
At the recently held Fashion week in Mumbai, several designers presented their latest collections. There were stunning creations to choose from, we picked a handful and have brought them to you right here in New York.
Shehnaai will now carry the bridal collections of designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Vikram Phadnis and Abhi Singh.
To give you a quick peek into Fashion Week:
It was all about inspiration from the ethnicities and traditions of the varied cultures and heritage of India.
Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee lived up to his genius and title of ‘master of kitsch’ , by presenting a brilliant line inspired by the crafts of Rural Bengal, Rajasthan and the Sundarbans.
Inspired by Aircels CSR project of Save the Tiger, he started the show with tones of ivory, black and yellow: the colors of the Indian tiger. His collection moved through various decades of fashion right from the ‘fun’decade of the 20’s, the elegance of 30’s and 40’s, to hints of boho chic of the 70’s and the daring 80’s. Combining khadi and handloom fabrics with rajasthani prints and colors, the designer had shifts, dresses, shirts, palazzo’s, sharara like jumpsuits, gowns and even his signature ‘short ’sarees worn over long, full skirts. An eclectic and unusual mix of vivid colors and earthy tones, embellishments and texture, which Sabyasachi always pulls off with such style, the designer’s collection was nothing short of fabulous!
Stay tuned to our blog for more updates, on designers Vikram Phadnis and Abhi Singh.
